Shedding light on the early urbanization of the Golden State, the oldest buildings in California uncover the history of an area that once had rugged topography, marked by mountain ranges and deserts. Lucky for us, the state remains true to its history and has kept alive many of the structures that tell the story of how it grew to have one of the strongest economies in the world. The oldest buildings in California are a reminder of how this place became the golden state it is today. Although Occidental College relocated to the nearby Eagle Rock neighborhood in 1912, a series of landmarked homes, including this one, are part of an area originally known as Professors’ Row. The home’s unique facade is inlaid with stones collected from the Arroyo Seco River, which connects with the larger Salinas River in the central valley of California.
In the 1980s, Alexander Twilight, a descendant of an early African American settler in Vermont, took interest in the stone house. He donated funds and led efforts to restore the home to its original 19th century appearance. Twilight helped obtain reproduction furniture and fixtures to accurately depict life in the 1840s. He also assisted with structural repairs, remodeling the kitchen, and repainting the interior with historic colors. In TRANSITion (2013) brought together 19 artists and arts groups responding to differing visions of ideal urban transportation systems or proposing their own.
